Love is Sweet with Rhinestones

Because I paint each and every sign order as the orders are placed, I am able to paint just about any color I'm asked for.  It's challenging to match up colors online, I must admit, as photographed colors often just are not true colors online.  But usually the wedding or event colors blend well, and that's what matters.

 

Once in a while a buyer will request a glitter glaze on the lettering, as shown in the following sign:

This buyer also request rhinestones!  I had never attached them to a sign before.  I wanted to make sure the rhinestones would not fall off (with cheap glue), nor could perhaps be picked off by some sweet little 3 year old child! I asked Mark (my husband) what glue he thought would be good.  He knew immediately that I should use what is called "PRO CA Cyanoacrylate Glue".  It's make by a company called "Great Planes".  You can order it through Amazon if you can't find it at a local store.  This glue is incredible.  But DO NOT let it get on your fingers, it adheres almost instantly and permanently.

 

This photo (from Amazon) shows "THICK", but the one I used was "MEDIUM".  They also have a "THIN". (You can click on the glue to get to Amazon.)

Just wanted to share a very good product.  Again, let's review what NOT to do with this glue---let it touch your skin!!!

 

My outdoor photography....but inside?  I have some lighting issues....
 

Advise, please?  I spend a lot of time painting, which leaves me little time to actually photograph my work.  I have lighting issues (obviously!) and wonder if anyone has some lighting tips? I take most of my photos at night and use every light available, but I'm not satisfied with the lighting.  Please don't suggest photographing during the day, as here in Oregon...well let's just say I could never be a "Natural Light" photographer!

I Was Chalking Before Chalking Was Cool

You know the song, "I was Country, when Country wasn't cool.", right? Well that's how it is with the chalkboard.  I was chalking before chalking was cool!  Years ago I fabricated a dozen or so various picture frames into darling chalkboards. I painted the frames white and shabbied them up.  I replaced the glass and cardboard with thin plywood, which I painted with black chalkboard paint. I've used them through the years for various events, such as retreats, etc.

Now there's "chalk art" and so much more!  Our three grandkids have always loved to draw on the boards, which I then can put up on the wall as art!  I have a whole set of them in one of the guests room walls.

One of the best Pinterest finds I've ever come across was this one, the "sharpen your chalk".  The minute I saw it I had that "ah hah" moment! 






Sharpened chalk makes it so much easier to write on the chalkboards, or do "chalk art".  (Google that and you will be in awe of some of the things the chalk artist create!)  The kids love to use the sharp chalk.

John Mark, who is our local pencil sharpener (I kid you not, he lives to sharpen pencils!) spent his recent visit here sharpening all the chalk! He had a huge pile of shavings, but the chalk was sharp!

Buzzing with Brides

My Etsy shop, Everyday Cookies Custom & Hand-painted Signs, has been buzzing with brides!  It's so fun when there's something *new* for the brides to use in their weddings.  I posted about it here.   The "ring bearer" is now the Sign Carrier!  He (or she) has a very important job now, to announce the bride!  The photo ops are fabulous now with the child carrying a sign.  Some of the brides are ordering the signs also for the little girls, their job went from "Flower Girl" to "Sign Girl".

All my signs are 100% hand made. I cut the wood, router the edges sand and sand some more.  Then I hand paint each and every sign to the specification of the order.

Here are just a few samples of the many I've been painting.  Most continue to ask for the signs painted in black on white, as it shows up best in photos. But I have painted some to match the bridesmaid dresses, etc.

I love Palm Sunday, Passion Week, Good Friday and I'm all about Resurrection Sunday! It's the basis of my faith:  My Savior rose from the grave!  "He Lives"  (in my heart!).  I've put together a special Passion Week Bible study that I can email as an attachment if you ask. It's a daily study following Jesus the last week before He died on the cross.  (just ask!)

I take vitamins daily, which worked in  my favor until the day after Christmas!  I caught a mean, lean, bug that parked me on the couch for a few days.  As I said, at least it was the DAY AFTER Christmas.  How to turn the proverbial lemons into lemonade? Make mine pink, please...

A couple things: The number one sweet deal was Netflix.  We have successfully stayed away from Netflix through the years.  But when you live out in the country and just need a movie, and you are sick, not able to drive to town to rent one (too much gas anyway!), Netflix starts to look pretty promising.  And throw in a month's free trial? 

I spent the next two days watching every episode of DC Cupcakes.  I have never watched the show on TV, I don't even know what channel it comes on or if we even receive it.  But I sure loved watching every show.  It was the perfect prescription for a sick girl, me!  The sisters interaction was fun to watch, as were all their creative cupcakes creations. 

The following Tuesday I was so excited when our daughter and family said they were coming over.  Someone to make cupcakes for---yippee!  I whipped up a batch of white chocolate cupcakes with white chocolate whipped icing.  To. Die. For.    I had been researching how to make yummy cupcakes using a store bought cake mix, and was successful. My mistake: I sent the ones we didn't eat back home with them, so that I wouldn't be tempted to eat them.  I was sick with the realization that I just made the best tasting cupcakes in my entire life and didn't keep any for us!   Oh well, Melissa and family enjoyed them. 

The second thing I did while sick was to put together a sort of craft box.  When I was in first grade I had whopping cough (yes, I really did, not a fun disease).  I missed about a month (or more) of school but my sweet mother was creative in keeping me busy.  I remember the Brand New Tablet she brought home one day.  The pages were multi-colored, so clean and new.  I may have had one pencil and a few crayons, but I was in heaven: a new tablet!    So when I'm sick on the couch for a few days I make up a "sick girl" box for myself, filling it with pretty paper scraps, glue and scissors.

 

With the paper scraps, stamps and pink paint chips (I use a lot of PINK in my sign painting business) I made "thank you" notes for all the lovely Christmas gifts I received. I used a dragonfly paper punch and punched a row of dragonflies (fly, flies?), gluing them onto fold brown Kraft paper scraps, cut to fit envelopes.  I used white stamping ink to stamp the "THANK YOU", as the white pops off the brown paper.  I called this my "Ombre Thank You Notes" and posted it to Instgram and Pinterest, attracting some attention!  Which is always fun. After this note tag was posted I had about a bajillion new followers to my Pinterest "Paper Love" board. 



The dragonfly punch is by Martha Stewart. It was a gift given to me by my sister a few years ago. I checked with her and she said she purchased it at Ross.  Since then I've checked and found this is a discontinued punch. But...there's always eBay!  You could use any design punch to get the same results.

Love the Children

My mind just can't grasp the facts, my heart aches at the news, and my soul cries out for the children (and adults) killed today.  I'd like to share a portion of what one of my friends wrote:

In our time of dispair, it is my hope that we, as a nation....as a world can remember to be the light in the darkness. To show the love, and compassion. To embrace our friends, and family. To reach out to those we meet. To put down our phones, laptops, and ipads, and fully connect with those around us. Be present....be aware......offer help....offer love. There is so much mental illness in our world. So many people who feel lost....helpless....hopeless....and angry. We must be part of the solution. Our children are counting on us.
 

We must love our children. All the children in our lives.  Please, try harder if you must, but love...

My JOY of the day was spending time helping to decorate gingerbread houses!  For the past several years I've held Gingerbread House Making parties here in our home (for all our grandchildren and any other children I could gather!).  But this year Melissa put on a party at her church for the mommies and children so I went to help and bring more children! 

When I walked in the door our granddaughters came running up to me, "Grandma!"  I grabbed them and hugged and kissed and just loved on them.  Their sweet smiles and voices filled my heart with JOY.

We ate candy, decorated the houses and even had lunch served to us (those Bridge gals are the best!).  Most of the children were young, the older ones were in school, so the houses were extremely loaded with candy! I had to laugh when I realized how long they took "decorating", piece by piece to get their houses looking perfect, when at a glace it look like a mound of candy!

Ells-Bells loved all the candy, too!  But she worked hard on her house,consentrating on her "work" and did a good job limiting her candy intake.  I will admit: at one point I caught her sucking on icing tube....LOL

 

 

Pure JOY for this grandma to be here today with the children....

Christmas Family Countdown Calendar Board

Years ago Melissa and I made Christmas Family Photo Countdown Calendar boards.  Mark cut the pine boards, cutting the corner rounds.  We painted the edges green then Melissa and I decoupaged pages from a vintage cookbook (picking the sweets pages) and then antiqued it a little with stain. We used wooden letters for "FAMILY", glittering them first.  We painted "Tis the Season for..." with black paint, but you could easily use a black Sharpie marker.

We went through our photos and cut out pictures of family, gluing them on scrapbook paper, then attaching eyelets with our Cropadiles.  I made a grid of paper, evening distributing the marks for the nails to line up perfectly, then nailed them on the boards (after the board dried) for the photos to hang from. I just used small nails we had in the shop.

This has been one of our favorite Christmas projects ever.  It's timeless...well almost, we have new additions to the family since we made them.  But you could switch out the photos every couple years.  The year Jessica and Craig were married I made a Family Christmas Countdown board for them, using photos from the years they had dated and from their wedding! 

Tonight while doing my Pinning "work"  (LOL!) I saw one of my sisters had pinned this Christmas craft!  I immediately knew what year it was and where to find the instructions (on a ripped out magazine page in my "save" drawer~). But now days we don't have to rip out magazine pages, we can just pin on Pinterest!

Still getting our Christmas decorations out and up.  Mark put up the outdoor lights today.  I've got a good start on my theme colors for the year, "black, white and red all over".  Here's a wall set I put together:

The Ring Bearer is now the Sign Carrier

It's been busy over at my Etsy shop, Everyday Cookies Custom Hand Painted Signs.  One of the new signs I've added has been wonderfully received.  In wedding processions the little boy used to always be the "ring bearer".  But often, because of his young age, he couldn't be trusted with the Real Ring, so he had a fake little ring tied on a satin pillow, which he may or may not drag on the floor.  But guess what? Something new!

The "ring bearer" is now the "sign carrier"!  How wonderful is this new tradition for the little man in the wedding?

I've painted many varieties, from "Uncle Adam...", to "Hey Mike....", and even "This is my Mommy....".   I'll paint whatever fits your wedding!  If you purchase just let me know what you want.

I hope all the girls had fun at Handmade U.  There's nothing like packing up all your best crafting supplies in a little suitcase then joining like-minded crafters for a weekend of fun!  New friendships are always made, and the crafting almost becomes secondary to the visiting.  Maybe that's how it was in the old days when the women would get together to quilt.  I don't quilt, but if I did it would be for the visiting!

Handmade U

Yay!  An art retreat you can attend this fall! 

Handmade U is an all inclusive art retreat where artists from all over the country gather to create, laugh, bong, shop and ....eat cupcakes! I won't be able to attend, but I will be a sponsor!

The instructors and projects for this event will be wonderfully creative. Just to drop a few names as far as instructors go, you'll get to take classes from Hope Karney Wallace (journal making and lettering class) and Liesel Lund (vintage children's book journal class, involving painting, collage and altering the books), and more!

This event will be held in Omaha, NE on September 20-22, 2012.  (Remember Omaha NE from "Silver Bella" of past years? I enjoyed the town a few years back when I was able to attend Silver Bella.)  There are a limited number of sign-ups, but still plenty of room for you!
