Farmers Market Sign ~ Farm Syle Living

https://www.etsy.com/listing/267122423/farmers-market-sign-large-farmstyle

Tuesday nights have always been my favorite night of the week.  Growing up it was my night to do the dishes, which you'd think would make Tuesday nights the most unfavorable night of the week, considering there were 11 people in our family.  Yes, I have 8 siblings!  However, the feeling I always got when I completed washing the dishes (always, always by hand, we never had a dishwasher that I can remember!), was one of complete relief!  I was FREE for another whole week!  Well, unless it was my turn to put the clothes on the clothes line, or fold and put away clothes....that's another story!

So now that I'm all grown up, Tuesday is the only night of the week that I must have the remote in my hand.   It's "Fixer Upper" night on TV!  There's so many reasons I love the show, but the fun Chip and Joanna have as they work together is a powerful testimony for marriage.  WORK TOGETHER and ENJOY, and have fun!  Yep, there's going to be that ONE phone call every week, where an unseen expense comes up and must be paid for by SOMEONE......   But they plow through it, and the fixed up houses shine like stars upon completion!

Joanna has a unique style when it comes to decorating the home for the big reveal.  I understand the home owners don't get to keep so much of what she displays, but they do get the option to purchase it.  There is often a big gift that Joanna gives the buyers, a table, art creation, or sign, perhaps.  I love her creative spirit in finding just what will blend in with the nature of the new home owner and family.  As far as Joanna's "style", well go search on the Pinterest boards for "Fixer Upper" style.  There's some good blog postings out there on how to create this look in your own home.  One main thing is to GET RID OF ALL YOUR JUNK!  Or, the "things" in your home that just take up space, need dusting, and don't really thrill your soul!  Minimize your "stuff", and maximize the things you love, making those items shine.

Why this show is often considered "farm style", I don't know.  Farm, ranch, country....all those styles really just blend.  Do you have a cow outside your back door?  Do you have horses in your front pasture?  Does your rooster crow at 4 AM?  We've had all that here, and more, but I've never really considered our home "farm style"!  When we first moved here in the country, I named our home, "Sweet Woodruff Acres".  At the time I was making a lot of herb gardens, and one of the herbs I grew was "Sweet Woodruff".  Those plants are long gone, but I stuck with the name. It helped that Woodruff is our last name!  And I love all sweet things!

Since I started watching "Fixer Upper", I thought about changing the name of our home to "Sweet Woodruff Farm".  We do have good memories of those days "farm style" days.   I have milked a cow for our usage, have had freezers full of beef, and nothing beats farm fresh eggs! But we haven't had chickens, cows and other farm animals here for years, so I'll stick with the original name, "Sweet Woodruff Acres."

But one thing for certain, we are a "fixer upper" home, in perpetual fixer upper stage and always have been!

So for now, I'll just paint farm signs!

Once last thing, when we bought our place here, it came with a pregnant cow!  Her name was Mabel.  "Ma----bel", the girls would yell.  (It was their chore to feed her after school.)

Hum, I guess we do live on a farm!

Have a blessed day!

I tried it and I like it!

(Photo filled post....)

I tried it and I like it! What is it? Coconut oil!

Jessica (daughter #2) mentioned making some chocolate chip cookies using coconut oil a while back. Honestly, I'm late for the dance, as I'd never heard of coconut oil for cooking.  Then I remembered even a longer-while back Melissa (daughter #1) had mentioned coconut oil for use for... something, but I just didn't remember!

I bought some coconut oil, which in itself was a challenge here in our town. I think I had to go to three store before I found a jar of it.  I originally was looking for "oil", as in canola oil or olive oil. I didn't even know it was a hard oil, as in "Crisco Oil"!  I had even called Jessica from the store when I couldn't find it, and that's when she said it's a solid oil.

Once home I used Jessica's recipe for "Coconut Oil Chocolate Chip Cookies."  Now I'm not like our daughters, who love chocolate chip cookies and/or chocolate chip cookie raw dough, (I do like a good sugar cookies!), but this raw dough was to die for!  Here's the recipe:

The baked cookies were yummy, too.  For some reason the dough reminded me of the chocolate chip cookie "dough" in the ice cream by the same name!

Fast forward a few weeks to a day out in the country picking blueberries.  I only had time to pick about 4 pounds, so bought a box of 15 pounds (the blueberry farm workers had picked them earlier that day).  I "sold" 5 pounds to my friend, then took the rest home to freeze.

Tonight for dinner I decided to make Blueberry Muffins, but use coconut oil for the "soft shortening".  Here's the recipe I used:

BLUEBERRY MUFFINS
Preheat oven to 400 degrees
Grease a 6-muffin tin

1 1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 cup soft shortening (this is where you use coconut oil!)
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries

Mix all ingredients except berries; gently fold in blueberries; fill muffin tin; bake at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes (tops will be a nice golden color when done); serve with butter!

(Sorry, I don't write out complete recipe instructions, once you've made a muffin-or whatever-you've got the technique!)

I have to say, these were the best blueberry muffins I've ever tasted!  I guess 1/2 cup of sugar will make anything taste good to me, but I think it was the coconut oil! (The main dish tonight was Sweet and Sour Pork over rice, just so you know it wasn't just muffins for dinner!)

I've been busy with various projects: my "big girl job", painting signs for my Etsy orders, and other custom signs orders from locals; and now a big even in our town called "Marshfield Vintage Market".  Here's the poster.

Melissa has a space and I'm her side kick!  I'll bring signs and other projects I've been working on, too many to even begin posting photos at this point.

And, finally, just for fun, a sampling of recent signs I've been painting:

(this sign is at Leaf's Treehouse, Coos Bay-unless sold)

(this sign is at "Overcoat", the store in Myrtle Creek, OR)

(this sign is at Leaf's Treehouse, Coos Bay, unless sold)

(this sign is at Leaf's Treehouse-unless it's sold)

(this sign is at Leaf's Treehouse, Coos Bay-unless it's sold)

(This sign is headed to the store, "Overcoat" in Myrtle Creek , Oregon, next to Dairy Queen. You simply must stop and visit Tonya if you are anywhere close!)

He has shown you O man LARGE sign

https://www.etsy.com/listing/178557876/24-inches-by-24-inches-she-is-clothed-in?ref=related-2

My large sign, "She is clothed..." is the perfect daily reminder that my strength comes from God.  I've painted this sign many times and knew it was perfect for a girl's room.  But what about verse sign for a boy's room. Ah, a buyer had me paint the perfect one, Micah 6:8.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/182227411/he-has-shown-you-o-man-what-is-good?

The Bible version I used was NKJ (New King James),  because I like the way they worded the "O man" part. If you purchase this sign let me know if this is the Bible version you want. I can use any version, such as KJV, NKJV, NIV, etc.

The size is 24 inches by 24 inches. (With the wood trim , it's about 26 inch square.) The color shown is called "Melted Chocolate" (a brown that for some reason shows up darker in the photo than it is). I can paint it in any color.

Bible verse signs are great for boys and girls rooms, they memorize the verse in no time at all!

It is well with my soul SIGN

One of our daughters often tells me, "I just keep swimming, keep swimming..."  I always laugh, because I'm on the other end of the phone doing the same thing! Like mother-like daughter! (By the way, our other daughter is exactly like me in so many ways, too! It's funny to have two of me walking around out there....).

I just keep painting, keep painting.......

I have variety of signs that I do paint, which is what keeps me from being board.  I paint a lot of signs for weddings; I paint a lot of signs for children's rooms; I paint a lot of custom family name signs; and more.  And, for fun I paint whatever I want, and put these signs up for sale on local sales boards, or give away as gifts.

Here's one I had recently painted, then made 2 or 3 more for orders.
(this measures 14" by 24")

One buyer said she remembers sitting at her at the feet of her grandmother, who sat in a rocker and sang the old hymn, "It Is Well With My Soul".  I enjoyed hearing her memories.

I nailed together thin boards to give it a sort of rustic-mini-pallet look.  What I'd like to do now is make more, and use various phrases from well loved hymns, such as "Amazing Grace", or "Be Thou My Vision".     *Be sure to leave a commit with your favorite well-loved hymn, I may use it next!*

Spring, spring, spring!  Hang in there friends, spring.is.on.the.way!

We had a major wind storm pass through last night and this morning, so when it cleared up this afternoon, somewhat, I made a quick run out to the gardens to cut some camellias.  Our camellia tree is pretty large, about 23 years old, and full of bloom right now.  But that wind storm sure knocked off a lot of blooms!  I brought in a bunch and set them in one of my ironstone soup tureens, ah...springs!

She is clothed with strength and dignity LARGE Sign Proverbs 31

The first "She is clothed..." sign I painted was a bit smaller than this one.  My next buyer asked for one sized 24 inches by 24 inches.  Also, she wanted not pink, but a gray-tan color.  My background color is MY fabulous "Sugar Cookie" color.  I LOVE PAINTING ANYTHING WITH THIS COLOR!

When I added the trim it actually measures almost 26 inches square.

This is a wonderful sign for a girl's room, or as a reminder for women who model their lives after the Proverbs 31 woman!

This sign is available for purchase from my Etsy shop (Everyday Cookies Custom and Hand-painted Signs).  You may select ANY color for the lettering.

Thank you for visiting today!  I do wish I could blog more.  I'm on Instagram, though, and post there more frequently, so follow me there if  you'd like!

Love is Sweet with Rhinestones

Because I paint each and every sign order as the orders are placed, I am able to paint just about any color I'm asked for.  It's challenging to match up colors online, I must admit, as photographed colors often just are not true colors online.  But usually the wedding or event colors blend well, and that's what matters.

Once in a while a buyer will request a glitter glaze on the lettering, as shown in the following sign:

This buyer also request rhinestones!  I had never attached them to a sign before.  I wanted to make sure the rhinestones would not fall off (with cheap glue), nor could perhaps be picked off by some sweet little 3 year old child! I asked Mark (my husband) what glue he thought would be good.  He knew immediately that I should use what is called "PRO CA Cyanoacrylate Glue".  It's make by a company called "Great Planes".  You can order it through Amazon if you can't find it at a local store.  This glue is incredible.  But DO NOT let it get on your fingers, it adheres almost instantly and permanently.

This photo (from Amazon) shows "THICK", but the one I used was "MEDIUM".  They also have a "THIN". (You can click on the glue to get to Amazon.)

Just wanted to share a very good product.  Again, let's review what NOT to do with this glue---let it touch your skin!!!

My outdoor photography....but inside?  I have some lighting issues....

Advise, please?  I spend a lot of time painting, which leaves me little time to actually photograph my work.  I have lighting issues (obviously!) and wonder if anyone has some lighting tips? I take most of my photos at night and use every light available, but I'm not satisfied with the lighting.  Please don't suggest photographing during the day, as here in Oregon...well let's just say I could never be a "Natural Light" photographer!

Blessings,
~Heidi
